Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Dulal Sarkar, also known as Babla Sarkar, was fatally shot on Thursday in West Bengal's Malda district. The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirming the leader’s death and describing the act as "murder."
In a post on social media platform X, Mamata Banerjee expressed her grief over the loss of Sarkar, whom she referred to as her "close associate." She highlighted Sarkar's contributions to the party, saying, "From the beginning of the Trinamool Congress, he (and his wife Chaitali Sarkar) worked hard for the party." Sarkar also served as a Malda councillor and was regarded as a key figure in the region.
The Chief Minister described the news as both "shocking" and "saddening," emphasizing her support for Sarkar's bereaved family. "I am so shocked and sad that I do not know how to convey my condolences to the bereaved family. May God give Chaitali strength to survive and fight the battle," Mamata Banerjee said.
Mamata also called for immediate and decisive action, demanding that the culprits be brought to justice without delay. Her nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has reportedly instructed the police to act swiftly and without bias, ensuring that political affiliations do not hinder the investigation.
Adding to the controversy, Mamata Banerjee alleged possible collusion involving local authorities. Speaking during a separate address, she stated, "By making adjustments with BSF, DM, and SP, infiltrators are being sent into Bengal. I am not saying that Malda DM is sending infiltrators, but if you remain silent, then what will I think?" Her remarks have sparked political debate, reflecting the tense environment in the region.
